The hibiscus plant is grown widely in the entire country of Ecuador. The plant tolerates dry and wet conditions and will grow rapidly from a 12 inch cutting to a 4 foot plant in less than a year. The hearty plant will grow in virtually any soil type, but thrives in rich soil and adequate moisture. The hibiscus plant flowers beautiful large colorful flowers throughout the year attracting butterflies, hummingbirds and bees. The plant is also prone to aphid infestations and mealy bugs. A good natural insecticide is necessary with weekly applications.
The hibiscus plant makes an excellent border hedge providing a thick privacy wall. The plant will grow to about 14 feet in height but can be trimmed to any desired height or shapes. The hibiscus flower is also know to be a beneficial health tea. The flower is high in minerals and vitamin C and is reported to lower cholesterol and blood pressure.
